Annalise Grimshaw: Building BLKSWN from story, place and wonder

For Annalise Grimshaw, BLKSWN was never a business idea born from a trend or a fleeting moment. It was a vision that had been quietly taking shape for years, one rooted in memory, place, and a lifelong fascination with the stories that spaces can tell.

Growing up in Australia, Annalise spent much of her childhood exploring the vast and varied landscapes of Western Australia. Family road trips carried her through remote regions where rust-red earth met turquoise coastlines, where ancient forests stood in quiet contrast to expansive plains carpeted with wildflowers. Those experiences instilled a deep sense of wonder and a lasting appreciation for the power of place.

Years later, while navigating early motherhood during the pandemic, Annalise found herself reflecting on those formative memories. In a world that had suddenly slowed down, she gained clarity around an idea she had been carrying for a long time: to create a textile and interiors brand that translated the beauty, history, and emotion of extraordinary destinations into objects for the home.

The name BLKSWN felt inevitable. The black swan, Western Australia's state emblem symbolised both the place that inspired the brand and the rarity of creating something truly distinctive. It became the perfect expression of Annalise's ambition to build a company grounded in authenticity rather than trends.

Her path to founding BLKSWN was anything but conventional. Originally studying Communications and Broadcasting, Annalise began her career in media and storytelling before moving into the corporate world. Along the way, she developed a deep understanding of audience connection, commercial strategy, and the emotional power of narrative. Yet creativity remained a constant pull.

That passion eventually led her back to design through property renovation.
Having grown up watching her parents restore and reimagine historic homes,
Annalise already understood the emotional impact that thoughtful design could have on everyday life. Renovating homes in Sydney became her practical design education, teaching her how people live within spaces, how materials evolve over time, and how carefully considered interiors can shape the way we feel.

Today, BLKSWN represents the convergence of every chapter of
her journey: the storyteller, the strategist, the renovator, and the lifelong observer of beauty in the natural world. At the heart of the brand is a belief that great design begins with a story. Rather than following seasonal trends or prescribed aesthetics, each BLKSWN collection starts with a destination, a landscape, or a piece of history. Through extensive research and craftsmanship, those narratives are translated into textiles and homewares rich with colour, texture, pattern, and meaning.

Western Australia remains the brand's greatest muse. Its untouched landscapes,
extraordinary biodiversity, layered histories, and sense of mystery continue to inspire collections that evoke deep ochres, mineral blues, soft sands, and forest greens. More importantly, they seek to capture the feeling of these places, the awe, grounding, and connection they inspire. For Annalise, luxury is not defined by minimalism or maximalism. It is defined by authenticity, craftsmanship, and confidence. Whether expressed through intricate embroidery, bespoke trims, monograms, or sculptural details, every BLKSWN piece is designed to become part of a larger story within the home.

Looking ahead, her vision is ambitious yet deeply personal. She hopes to establish BLKSWN as a respected global lifestyle brand, one that inspires curiosity, sparks conversation, and creates emotional connections through design. Above all, she wants to build something enduring: a legacy founded on creativity, craftsmanship, and authenticity that can be passed down to future generations. Because for Annalise, BLKSWN has never been about following the moment. It has always been about creating something meaningful enough to outlast it.
